Magical Beast · 2 hexes · SM +0 Basilisk (Enraged Eggplant; answers SRD 3.5, SRD 5.1)

A low, heavy lizard about as long as a man is tall, running on eight short legs, rough-scaled in olive and ochre with a blunt wedge of a head. It is slow, ill-tempered and entirely unhurried, because it has no need of speed: whatever meets its glowing amber eyes stops being flesh.

Petrifying GazePetrifying Gaze (10): A basilisk’s petrifying gaze spreads out in a cone 15 yards long and 15 yards wide at the end. It can select who is affected; potential victims must be looking at it. For every target, there is a Quick Contest between the basilisk’s Will (minus a range penalty taken from the Speed/Range Table) and each target’s HT. If the basilisk wins, the target is petrified. (The distinction between “paralyzed” and “petrified” generally works in their victims’ favor – e.g., they won’t starve – so the basilisk does not pay extra for this.) Someone looking at a reflection of a basilisk is not affected by its gaze. Fighting while looking in a mirror is at a -5 penalty; attacks made with closed eyes are at -10. Petrification can be removed with Remove Curse or Stone to Flesh. This attack also affects insubstantial beings.10A basilisk’s petrifying gaze spreads out in a cone 15 yards long and 15 yards wide at the end. Description
Written by Dungeons on Automatic, released under cc_by_4_0
  • GCS ancestry draft: gcs/basilisk.gct
  • Source template total: 54 points.
  • Library-rebuilt template total: 54 points.
  • CER was computed from parsed Typical Stats using the Dungeons On Automatic baseline CER path.
  • Issue #5: 0 special ability construction(s) restored and 1 annotated with the source's stated cost. 1 save-or-disable construction(s) are scored through the affliction term at the source's stated point cost, or at Binding ST where the source builds the ability as a Binding.
  • CER recomputed from the reviewed Typical Stats through the canonical Dungeons on Automatic CER path: OR 22, PR 10, CER 32, threat tier standard.
  • Conversion baseline reported OR 7, PR 10, CER 17 (tier minor). The reviewed values come from the consumer CER implementation, which rounds damage once after the damage-type multiplier and credits ranged accuracy; the conversion baseline ceilinged the damage base first and ignored range.
  • Encounter metadata derived (gregarious): average number appearing 2, wandering weight 3. Encounter metadata derived for 0.2.0 from the reviewed threat tier and creature class (appearing: minor 4 / standard 2 / major 1 / severe 1, forced to 1 for solitary classes — including swarms, which are a single multi-body creature — and raised to 6 for gregarious minor creatures; wandering weight: minor 4 / standard 3 / major 2 / severe 1). The fan-conversion source states no appearing-in-numbers or wandering values, so these are derived, not source mechanics.
  • Lair, treasure, and grappling remain unpopulated in 0.2.0 by package policy: the authorized fan-conversion source states no lair, treasure, or grappling values, and review declines to invent them. See review/policy/0.2.0-empty-field-policy.md.
  • Description text is original Dungeons on Automatic prose written from this record's own converted statistics and from the project's art direction for the creature. It is not derived from the authorized fan-conversion source, which states no creature descriptions, and not from any SRD. It carries its own authorship and CC BY 4.0 terms in the description field. See review/policy/description-policy.md.
  • Review approved by automated-mechanical-review on 2026-07-26 (batch ee-2026-07-26-b4-special-mechanics); GCS fidelity check passed, DOA playability check passed.
  • Special-mechanics record. Mechanics the CER path cannot price are named per record in review/reports/cer-audit.md rather than folded into the number, and encounter counts are capped where a save-or-disable attack is present.
